2009 has been a good year for Jermain Defoe.

In January he rejoined Tottenham Hotspur from Portsmouth where he would once again team up with manager, Harry Redknapp, and Defoe helped fire Spurs to an eighth-place finish in the 2008-09 Premier League.

His form in N17 certainly caught the eye of Fabio Capello, who awarded Defoe his first England cap of the year against Kazakhstan in June. But it was in Defoe’s next three internationals that he really excelled, scoring five times.

Against Andorra four days later he replaced Rooney at half-time and scored the fourth and fifth goals of the game. First, he headed home a Glen Johnson centre before pouncing to convert a David Beckham free-kick after Koldo Alvarez fumbled.

In England’s first match of this season, in Holland, Defoe was again summoned from the bench and again he delivered, as his brace helped the Three Lions salvage a 2-2 draw. On 49 minutes the 27-year-old latched on to a Frank Lampard through ball and sprinted towards goal, finishing expertly.  His second came on 77 minutes after good work from debutant, James Milner.

Defoe’s other two appearances for England came against Croatia and Brazil and currently sitting atop this season’s Premier League goalscoring chart with 14 goals, he has every reason to look forward to 2010.
