Having made the switch to Manchester City in 2008, Wayne Bridge had sought to establish his place as a regular left-back for club and country.
The seemingly immovable Ashley Cole in his way both for England and Chelsea, Bridge had made the leap for regular first team football as a springboard for international success.
Starting the final two matches of 2008 was a big step for Bridge, both victories away to Belarus and Germany, the Man City defender played his part both in defence and attack in both matches.
2009 would again prove a challenge for England however, as Cole was a regular in the England team on top form. Bridge would have to wait until June before his first cap, against Andorra at Wembley - a night which would prove to be the Three Lions' biggest home win in more than three years.
Bridge would come off the bench in Amsterdam, combining neatly with James Milner on his debut down the left flank, as England came from two goals down to seal a dramatic draw in the opening game of the season.
Just as he did in 2008, Bridge would start the final two matches of 2009, against Belarus and Brazil. England would not repeat the feat of two victories however, although they defeated the Belarussians by three goals to end their World Cup qualification on a high Brazil inflicted England's third defeat of the year in the final match.
