In March, David Beckham became England’s most capped outfield player, winning his 109th cap against Slovakia at Wembley Stadium.

The midfielder featured in eight of England’s eleven matches in 2009, mainly appearing from the substitutes’ bench, though he did start the 6-0 win over Andorra in June and the 2-2 draw with Holland in August.

Beckham played a prominent role in the Andorra victory, spraying passes and orchestrating play from the middle of the park and it was a Beckham free-kick that brought about England’s fifth goal. Andorra ‘keeper, Koldo Alvarez, was unable to hold on to Beckham’s centre and Jermain Defoe pounced to score his second of the evening.

Beckham also had a hand in England’s second goal against Belarus in October. He had only been on the field a matter of minutes but his quick, short corner found Shaun Wright-Phillips in space and the Manchester City wide man drilled home a low effort from the edge of the box. Beckham even did enough in this half-an-hour cameo to be named the Nationwide Man of the Match.

With the MLS season now finished, the 34-year-old will re-join AC Milan on loan in January as he bids to maintain his form and fitness in a World Cup year. Beckham now sits on 115 caps, just ten behind England’s most capped player of all time, Peter Shilton, and he will no doubt be looking to add to his tally in 2010.
