Eriksson's amazing run has taken in Euro 2004 qualifying victories over all four of England's Group 7 rivals as well as friendly wins over Croatia, South Africa and Serbia and Montenegro.

Last Saturday's seventh consecutive win, achieved in difficult circumstances away to Macedonia, means that Sven's players have equalled England's post-war record.

Between October 1949 and June 1950, Walter Winterbottom's side won seven games on the trot but any confidence that built up was soon shattered when England lost 1-0 to the USA in their second match of the 1950 World Cup.

England next won seven in a row from Febraury to July 1966, a run which ended with England's 0-0 draw against Uruguay in the World Cup Finals at Wembley.

With Liechtenstein to come on Wednesday, England will be confident of making it eight wins out of eight but they will still have a lot of work to do to break the all time record.

Ten wins in a row is the best ever, and that remarkable run was done nigh on a hundred years ago: from June 1908 to June 1909.

All England need to do therefore is beat Liechtenstein tomorrow and Turkey in October to equal a 94-year-old record. After that, who knows?...
