Sven watched his own team train before training his sights on Slovakia v Turkey

Sven watched his own team train before training his sights on Slovakia's defeat at the hands of Turkey on Saturday night...

Having met up at lunchtime the whole squad, including the fit-again Matthew Upson, trained at the Middlesbrough training complex in the bright afternoon sunshine.

It was a light session and there was a welcome visit from the highly rated goalkeeping coach Paul Barron, who has played a significant role in David James' career since the pair worked together at Aston Villa.

In the session, Sammy Lee put the players through their paces while Sven looked on from the sidelines.

Once again Steven Gerrard looked in majestic form, with some of his crosses from the right flank leaving the coaching staff purring in appreciation.

There were a number of good, solid tackles from Jamie Carrahger while a couple of John Terry's left foot volleys showed that he has a rare touch for a big centre half.

After training there was just time for dinner before the players and coaches settled down to watch Slovakia v Turkey live from Bratislava.

Gary Guyan, the team's video technician, had arranged with the BBC for the match to be pumped straight into the hotel and the squad were treated to an entertaining encounter, if not the ideal result with Turkey running out 1-0 winners.

Sven, sat in his customary position next to Tord, took notes throughout the match and he will have seen enough to know that Slovakia will be dangerous opponents on Wednesday.

Quick, committed and technically able, they had the majority of the possession and a multitude of chances. It was only their lack of a finishing that left them without a point from a game to which they contributed so much.

Let's hope they continue to find goals elusive on Wednesday night.

The team will train at 10am on Sunday before player press interviews in the afternoon.
