Despite overcoming a plucky challenge from San Marino, England's Regions' Cup representatives, Mid Cheshire League, narrowly miss out on qualification from Intermediary Round Group 3.

A 1-0 win thanks to Kevin Towey's strike 20 minutes from time was not quite enough as Republic of Ireland - playing hosts Semberija of Bosnia - scored a last minute penalty to draw their final group game 2-2.

That left England one point off the Irish in second place and ended their hopes of progressing into the next stage.  But Mid Cheshire League secretary Rob Goodwin-Davey pointed to the defeat against the Irish as the cause of the team's anguish.

"Everyone was absolutely gutted," he said.

"We've gone out because of a poor 30-minute spell that cost us against the Republic of Ireland - that's what it boils down to.

"It's left a bitter taste in our mouths and it was very hard to pick the players up after the game.

He added: "It's been a fantastic adventure for everyone and the players have been lucky enough to represent their country six times, but it doesn't make up for the disappointment of going out of the competition."
