The England C team's trip to Italy last week was not without drama during the match, with Italy having a goal ruled out in stoppage time, but the drama continued on the trip home as the squad's BA Boeing 737 was forced to make an emergency landing at Gatwick on the return trip from Naples.

Leagues Manager Mike Appleby takes up the story. "The first we knew of any problem was when the pilot aborted the landing and climbed away from the airport.

"The Captain advised that there was nothing to be concerned about and that we would land shortly. However we did not appear to be coming back into land and after about 25 minutes the Captain called the cabin crew to the cockpit for a briefing.

"Following this the Captain advised that there was a problem with the nose landing gear which was indicating that it would not lock in the down position. He stated that we would attempt to land and that we should be ok as a visual check had indicated that the nose wheel was fine.

"He stated that the emergency services would on the runway and follow the aircraft until it stopped. And that we should not be alarmed.

"The aircraft circled and finally made its approach and landed safely."

Appleby added: "It was an unreal experience as we touched down not knowing if the wheels would collapse on landing. Luckily everything went well and we were taxied back to the NorthTerminal around an hour late. The cabin was very calm despite everyone no doubt having their personal thoughts.

"I have often wondered what it would be like to experience a situation like that - now I know!"
