England National Game XI coach Paul Fairclough has named his squad for this month’s International Friendly against Northern Ireland and will be without striker Craig Mackail-Smith.
The former Dagenham & Redbridge forward was in Fairclough’s initial plans last week after scoring three goals in seven appearances for the Three Lions.
But speculation over a transfer away from the Daggers was finally confirmed on Monday as he put pen to paper on a deal with Peterborough United.
The move to the League Two outfit, along with fellow ex-Dagger Shane Blackett, now means that the 22-year-old is ineligible for the National Game XI and adds another name to the list of England players to join the Posh this season.
George Boyd, who scored once against Holland in the November European Challenge Trophy decider, moved to Peterborough from Stevenage Borough earlier this month and was swiftly followed by Woking keeper Shwan Jalal. Aaron McLean is another ex-NGXI striker who arrived at London Road from Grays Athletic in October.
However, Fairclough has been able to call on Stevenage striker Steve Morison and Northwich Victoria defender Kieran Charnock, both scorers, along with Mackail-Smith and Boyd, in the 4-1 win over the Dutch, while York’s Clayton Donaldson is also included once more, despite agreeing a move to Scottish Premier League side Hibernian in the summer.
The match on 13 February at Mourneview Park, home of Glenavon FC, will see England face the best young talent on offer in the Irish Premier League, with coach David Jeffrey picking players who have featured for Northern Ireland Under-21 side.
