Famous five

Fabio Capello's England have now won five matches in a row - 2-0 v Andorra, 4-1 v Croatia, 5-1 v Kazakhstan, 3-1 v Belarus and 2-1 v Germany.

The last winning sequence as good as that, or better, happened between October 2005 and June 2006. Sven-Goran Eriksson's side won eight in a row before Sweden held them to a 2-2 draw during the World Cup Finals in Germany.

Five or more consecutive wins has now been achieved 17 times since the war - by Capello, Eriksson (three times), Hoddle (once), Robson (twice), Greenwood (three times), Ramsey (four times) and Winterbottom (three times).

Eriksson's sides twice won eight in a row, the best figure post-war. The best run ever, though, is TEN in a row.

From June 1908 to June 1909 England won 6-1 and 11-1 v Austria, 7-0 v Hungary, 4-0 v Bohemia, 4-0 v Ireland, 2-0 v Wales, 2-0 v Scotland, 4-2 v Hungary, 8-2 v Hungary and 8-1 v Austria.

That was an average of 5.6 goals per match. Winterbottom's England were no slouches either - their results in six matches from October 1960 to May 1961 were 5-2, 9-0, 4-2, 5-1, 9-3 and 8-0. Jimmy Greaves contributed 11 goals, and Bobby Charlton and Bobby Smith eight each, as that England team managed an even better average of 6.6.

Capello's five, of course, have included four away fixtures.
