Men's Senior Team

Pick of the Premiership

The FA's Director of Football Development, Sir Trevor Brooking, has backed the strength in depth of English talent, after eight of the 11 places in the PFA's Premier League Team of the Season were occupied by England stars.

Chelsea captain John Terry, voted the Players' Player of the Season, was joined in the team by fellow internationals Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Andrew Johnson on a fantastic night for the Three Lions.

It is the first time in seven years that so many of England's finest have graced the team of the season, and their success reflects an impressive year at international level.

In the nine games played since Euro 2004, England have won six and drawn two, losing just one friendly match, and currently sit top of World Cup Qualifying European Group 6.

One man central to England's outstanding record has been Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, whose performances in the Premiership were also acknowledged on Sunday.

Fresh from thumping in a wonderful 25-yard volley against Newcastle United, the 19-year old picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year award to round off a superb evening for the national side.

On hearing the news, Sir Trevor Brooking piled praise on those rewarded by their fellow professionals, and believes their achievement signifies the major strength of England's current crop of stars.

"It’s a reflection of the consistency of both the individuals and the clubs they play for," he enthused.

"While we do have more foreign players playing in the Premier League these days this is confirmation that the quality of our English players is improving all the time.

"These are all young players with great ability and from an England point of view demonstrate the strength in depth that we are looking to build."
