Wright in place

Sven-Goran Eriksson believes that Shaun Wright-Phillips has what it takes to succeed at international level.

With the World Cup coming in two years time, Sven is hoping the Manchester City winger can convince him he is worthy of a World Cup spot.

Wright-Phillips, 22, scored on his England debut against the Ukraine and will be hopeful of being named in the squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers.

"He has two years to convince me to take him to the World Cup," Sven said.

"He's also blessed with pace, but we have a lot of young players in the squad who are quick."

"Of course Wright-Phillips would never be able to win the ball in the air against someone such as Sol Campbell, but that doesn't make him a weak player.

"You can't have 10 players as small as him, but he has other qualities. He's very positive going forward and also when he's defending."

Sven will name his squad for September's crucial qualifiers away to Austria and Poland here on TheFA.com on Sunday and the list of players could include some of the new faces that took part in the match at St. James' Park last week.

With the focus on qualifying for Germany in two years time, Sven will be looking for some younger players to break in to his squad, one of whom is certainly Wright-Phillips.

"It's a dream for every little boy to play for his country, but now he has to kick on from here," Sven continued.

"We spoke about him going to Portugal, but it's difficult to take inexperienced players to big tournaments.

"But he did well in his first game and now it's up to him. The squad for the games against Austria and Poland will be similar to the one I picked against Ukraine.

"You wouldn't normally put in too many players for the first time in a qualification match and I'm not expecting to make too many changes."
