Kenny Swain names his 18-man squad for Montaigu Tournament.
The Montaigu Tournament
An U16 International Friendly Tournament
England, Ukraine, Gabon, Japan
Wednesday 31 March – Monday 5 April 2010
Montaigu, France Kenny Swain has named his England U16 squad to take part in the Montaigu Tournament in France at the end of the month.
England will take on Ukraine, Japan and Gabon in the space of just four days, giving Swain’s youngsters their first taste of tournament football and their first experience of playing against non-European sides. Should England progress from the group stage they will then face either France, Portugal, United Arab Emirates or Benin in the Final on Monday 5 April. Swain has guided his previous two U16 sides to glory in this tournament.
The squad for Montaigu mainly comprises the players that helped England win the Victory Shield at the end of last year, but Swain has handed Tyrell Belford, George Evans and Matthew Regan their maiden international call-up.
England defeated Wales 1-0 in October courtesy of a late Zak Ansah header before overcoming a resolute Northern Ireland outfit at the beginning of November. Blair Turgott put the Young Lions ahead in the 50th minute before Matthias Fanimo sealed the win in added time, setting up a winner-takes-all scenario against Scotland. The Scots went ahead through Jack Grimmer but Ansah levelled and Turgott fired home the winner.
Last month, the young Arsenal forward scored his third England goal of the season in a 1-1 draw with Belgium.
