England claimed the bronze medal in the World Deaf Championships after beating South Africa 18-0 in the Third/Fourth place play-off.

Among the scorers were Danielle Evans and Donna Cross who grabbed four goals each, with Camilla Willis scoring a brace.

Head Coach Julie Callaghan was delighted with the victory after narrowly being edged out by Russia in the semi final.

"We knew we had goals in us and we must have saved them for the bronze medal match! It seemed as though every time we attacked, we scored. After the disappointment of losing to Russia, we finished the tournament on a high and that was important."

England can count themselves unlucky to lose the semi final after being 2-0 up in the searing 103 degrees heat. Russia forced extra-time with just five minutes remaining and grabbed two goals in the final 30 minutes to seal a 4-2 win and a place in the final – where they went on to beat Germany 1-0, also after extra-time.

Since their formation two years ago, the England Women’s Deaf team have now won three medals in three separate tournaments.

They collected a silver medal in the 2006 European Futsal Championships, another bronze medal in last year’s World Futsal Championships and Julie believes that it’s only a matter of time before the Three Lions finally grab the gold.

"There’s a little bit of work to do, but we’re a really young side and we were so close to the final this year.

"We’ve definitely got the talent and I'm looking forward to working with this team in the next couple of years. It’s an exciting time for the England Women’s Deaf Team – we’re only going to get better."
