The Great Britain Blind Squad are just one win away from both the final of the European Championships and a place at next year’s Paralympics in Beijing after securing a last gasp 1-1 draw with Italy in Greece on Tuesday night.
Swindon’s Darren Harris found the net with just 54 seconds left on the clock to leave GB undefeated and the team secured their place ahead of Italy in the group standings by winning the penalty shootout which separates teams that are level on points.
Man of the match, John Pugh, saved three Italian penalties in the shootout before Dave Clarke buried his spot kick to book Great Britain’s place in the semi finals on Friday.
GB coach, Tony Larkin, was delighted with the late comeback after Italy had taken the lead in the first half with a penalty shot from the eight yard mark.
“It was certainly hard work and we were disappointing in the first half," he said.
“I told the lads at half time that they had worked too hard to go home at this stage and they showed great character to get a draw from the game,” commented Tony.
GB performance Manager, Jeff Davis, added: “Tony changed tactics in the second half and Darren Harris was moved up front to support Dave Clarke. Italy tried to get as many men behind the ball as possible but Darren’s cool finish eased the pressure and it was a well earned draw.”
Great Britain now face France in the semi finals on Friday with the winners guaranteed a place at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing.
