European Deaf Futsal Championship Final

Saturday 18 November 2006
Having beaten Denmark in a thriller match 48 hours earlier, England Women's Deaf Futsal team benefited from a well deserved rest ahead of their final encounter against the hosts, Russia at the European Deaf Women's Futsal Championship.
There were injuries worries for the captain, Darmus Cooke, who took a heavy knock on her ankle, and sadly, she couldn't be fit for the Final, and had to cheer her team on from the side lines. Esther Maycock took the armband for the match.
Russia started off brightly, and it took a while for the ladies to get behind the ball and take control. Russia's Irina Degtyareva had to be watched out for and Roanna Simmons had to work hard to lock down the Russian number ten, who was capable of killing the game off with her powerful shots.
England managed to take some possession of the ball, and Clare Davies was unlucky to see her shot go wide of the post on an attacking run. Susan McKeown, who scored an excellent goal against Denmark in the Semi-Final, managed to get a couple of shots on target but she was thwarted by the Russian Goalkeeper.
Russia eventually took the lead from a well-taken corner, which was shot in from the right side from the Russian number eight. England fought back with a well taken attempt from Sharon Molloy, who saw her effort go close in the goal. Carly Waters was sensational with her instinctive saves, but she was unable to prevent the Russia doubling their lead with a few minutes remaining.
Russia celebrated their victory, but the England team couldn't be faulted for their efforts in the match and fought bravely in the match until the very end.
