Formerly coach of the Austrian national side, Baric took charge two years ago following the failure of his predecessor, Mirko Jozic, to lead Croatia beyond the group stages of the 2002 World Cup.

Baric’s most notable achievements in club management included leading Austrian sides SK Rapid Wien and SV Austria Salzburg to the finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Cup respectively.

After returning to his homeland, Baric then went on to win back-to-back titles with NK Dinamo Zagreb.
