Another two-horse race, Group 7 was decided by the two matches between England and Turkey.
Though the English were the first to stutter, only managing a 2-2 draw at home to Macedonia, they made up for that error by beating the Turks 2-0 at the Stadium of Light
Both sides then won their next three games to set up a titanic winner-takes-all match in Istanbul in October.
England's goalless draw in that match decided the group's final placings, with Sven-Göran Eriksson's side finishing both unbeaten and top of the pile, while Senol Günes' men were consigned to the play-offs.
Slovakia's 2-0 win in Liechtenstein, achieved thanks to a brace from Robert Vittek, left them third in the group.
