Arsenal v Everton
The FA Tesco Women's Premier League Cup
Second Round
2pm, Sunday 5 October 2008
Meadow Park, Borehamwood FC
Arsenal will be aiming to avenge last season’s FA Tesco Women’s Premier League Cup Final defeat by Everton when the teams meet in Round Two of the competition at Boreham Wood on Sunday afternoon.
But the Toffees, having proved that their surprise 1-0 win against the Cup favourites was no fluke by subsequently ending the Gunners’ 100 per cent Premier League record with a goalless away draw, are equally as determined to repeat their Cup KO blow.
And despite having lost 1-0 to Arsenal when the fierce rivals met in August’s Community Shield match, Everton midfielder Amy Kane – who hit the winner in February’s Premier League Cup Final – reckons they can stun the Gunners again.
Kane says: "We showed last season we are closing the gap on Arsenal and we feel we can beat them again. We took great confidence from the League Cup Final victory and we’ll be aiming for a performance to match the one we gave that night.
"We’d worked very hard in the build-up to The Final and on the night we stuck to our game plan, which was absolute key to getting the result. We did it again when we went to their place in the League and might have won that game as well.
"It was obviously disappointing to lose against them in The Community Shield, but since then we’ve won every single one of our competitive games and so apart from Arsenal we’re the only National Division team with a 100 per cent record.
"We’ve done that without playing particularly well, but they say the mark of a good team is winning games when you’re not at your best and that’s what we’ve been doing in most of our matches so far.
"Having said that, we know that nothing short of our best will do against Arsenal and that will really focus us on Sunday. Winning the Premier League Cup last season gave the club its first major trophy for 10 years – now we want more!"
