Prolific youngster Beth Mead opened the scoring in the 12th minute but Lisa Giampalma equalised just four minutes later. Kelly McDougall re-established the Black Cats’ lead almost immediately before Mead made it 3-1 at the break. She completed her hat-trick shortly after the interval to put the hosts in a totally commanding position. An Ellie Gilliatt own goal made it 5-1 in the 68th minute and there was still time for Rachel Furness and Sophie Williams to get themselves on the scoresheet. A converted Kayleigh Mitchell free-kick in the final minute was mere consolation as Sunderland eased into the last eight. They will be joined by last year’s runners-up Leeds United, who beat Yeovil Town 1-0, and 2011 winners Barnet, who defeated Lewes 2-1.
