John Salomon’s Watford went top of their Premier League Cup group and extended their unbeaten start to the season with a narrow win at Barnet, the 2011 winners.
A Cally Rowell penalty on 38 minutes was enough to secure the three points and only for some heroics from Bees ‘keeper Cherie Rowlands the scoreline could have been more emphatic.
It leaves the Hornets with ten points from their four games and means they have now gone nine games without defeat.
Salomon said: “Today was another step in the right direction for us.
“We set out to qualify from the group, but having achieved that with a game in hand, I’m delighted we have approached another game with a winning mentality and got the result that we deserved.
“We’re unbeaten in nine games now, which includes playing the champions twice, so we now focus our efforts on keeping the momentum going to Cardiff next week.”
In Group 2, a Kim Stenning double helped Brighton to a 4-0 win away at Millwall. Kirsty Barton and Catherine O’Hagan grabbed the other two goals for the visitors.
