Sunderland 3-1 Newcastle United The FA Women’s Premier League Cup 2pm, Sunday 14 October 2012 The Hetton Centre Sunderland took another step towards defending The FA Women’s Premier League Cup by beating local rivals Newcastle United on Sunday. After a cagey opening, the Black Cats took the lead in the 14th minute when captain Stephanie Bannon turned home a corner from close range after Rachel Furness’s initial effort had hit the bar. The skipper scored again soon after, again from a set piece, and Sophie Williams made it 3-0 before the break. Newcastle did pull a goal back in the second half, but Sunderland could have won by an even greater margin, having missed a penalty and struck the woodwork four times.
