Sunderland took another step towards defending The FA Women’s Premier League Cup by beating local rivals Newcastle United on Sunday.

After a cagey opening, the Black Cats took the lead in the 14th minute when captain Stephanie Bannon turned home a corner from close range after Rachel Furness’s initial effort had hit the bar.

The skipper scored again soon after, again from a set piece, and Sophie Williams made it 3-0 before the break.

Newcastle did pull a goal back in the second half, but Sunderland could have won by an even greater margin, having missed a penalty and struck the woodwork four times.
