With just under two weeks to go until The FA Women’s Cup sponsored by E.ON 2011 Final between Arsenal and Bristol Academy, representatives of both clubs travelled to Coventry, the host city, on the charm offensive.
Gunners boss Laura Harvey and promising young midfielder Steph Houghton joined up with Bristol duo Corinne Yorston and Ann-Marie Heatherson to both publicise The Final to the locals and to familiarise themselves with the surroundings at Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena.
The quartet were accompanied by X Factor finalist Paije Richardson, who will perform on the pitch at half-time.
Incredibly, Arsenal are seeking their eleventh Women’s Cup crown while, in contrast, Bristol will be looking to lift The Cup for the first-ever time.
These two sides have met in this competition three times before, each time at the Semi-Final stage – and each time Arsenal ran out victorious, en route to glory. This is Bristol’s first appearance at this stage of The FA Women’s Cup.
“It’s great to be in this Final,” said Bristol forward Heatherson. “We lost our first FA WSL game 4-0 to Birmingham, but that wasn’t really us out there. Getting to this Final has showed the sort of side we have grown into and what a good side we can be on our day.
“We are playing really well, we are scoring goals and we are creating a lot of chances. Hopefully we can keep that going against Arsenal.”
The north Londoners were beaten by Everton in last season’s Final and Houghton believes her new team-mates are hungrier than ever in their pursuit to reclaim The Cup.
“There was a lot of talk of revenge when we played Everton in the Fifth Round and that Final defeat really spurred all the girls on,” she said. “I know they do not want to go through that losing feeling again. We just need to make sure we are prepared on the day. We are taking nothing for granted.”
