Chelsea Ladies secured their spot in the quarter final of The FA Women’s Cup, but it took them 120 minutes to get past a resilient Millwall team on Sunday.

Casey Stoney’s team had only reached the Fifth Round with a win at Liverpool just seven days earlier and they were forced into extra time on that occasion too.

Against Millwall, a combination of missed opportunities and an inspired performance from the visiting goalkeeper meant they had to go the full distance again.

"We went to extra time last week when we missed about 27 chances, and it was the same again this week so it's a bit frustrating,” revealed player manager Stoney after the game.

"It is a bit of a positive that we got the result in the end though.”

Chelsea took the lead in the first half, when Stoney’s cross from the right in the 17th minute picked out youngster Drew Spence and she made no mistake by turning the ball home from close range.

The visitors hit back though, when a good move saw Ann-Marie Heatherson finish well after a pacy cross was delivered into the danger zone from the right flank. There were to be no more goals in the 90 minutes though, as both sides missed chances to take the lead.

Eventually, Chelsea’s determination paid off though as the ball was worked to Dunia Susi in the area and she finished tidily in the second period of extra time to put the Blues in the driving seat.

Emma Whitter then made the win secure in the 113th minute after taking advantage of a defensive slip up to score from inside the box.

"We knew Millwall were a side that would work hard and press you all over the pitch and we knew we had to get the ball down and play it quickly,” added Stoney.

"We could quite easily have won by more if we had been clinical. I think we all need to have a bit more composure in front of goal, myself included.

"I thought it was a fair result though and the scoreline was fair.”
