Fifth Round results Gresley survived a late rally from Long Buckby to win a thrilling Fifth Round Proper tie by 4-3, the stand-out result on an entertaining Saturday of action in The FA Vase.
After falling behind to Dan Holman’s 10th minute opening goal, double strikes from Royce Turville and Rob Spencer established a 4-1 lead for Derybshire’s Gresley.
However, late goals from Dan Chilton and Jonathan Crockett set up a tense finale before Gresley eventually held on to earn a place in the last eight of the competition.
Meanwhile, FA Vase holders Whitley Bay were held to a 1-1 draw by Chertsey Town in Surrey.
The north-east side fell behind to Ollie Treacher’s opening goal after just four minutes of play, but were soon back in the tie thanks to Richard Hodgson's strike four minutes later.
But despite that end-to-end opening to the match, neither side was able to break the ensuing deadlock in the remaining 82 minutes, or extra-time, so a replay will be required to settle the tie.
Elsewhere, another north-east side, Shildon, required extra-time to defeat St Ives Town 3-1, while Suffolk’s Needham Market defeated Daventry Town 2-0 and Norton & Stockton Ancients triumphed 2-0 at New Mills.
Extra-time couldn’t separate Whitehawk, of East Sussex, and Marske United, of Yorkshire, who drew 1-1 while a replay will also be required to settle the tie between Devon’s Willand Rovers and Leicestershire’s Barwell who played out a 2-2 draw.
In the day’s remaining Fourth Round replay, Wroxham triumphed 3-0 in a penalty shoot-out against Armthorpe Welfare, after the scoreline had remained 1-1 after extra-time.
