Fifth Round results Suffolk's Needham Market reached The FA Carlsberg Vase quarter-final stage for the third year in succession with a hard fought 2-0 victory over Daventry Town.
Second-half goals from Damien Hilton and Craig Parker sealed Needham’s passage to the last eight of the competition, in a tight encounter at Bloomfields.
In form Needham, second in the Ridgeons Premier League, were pushed all the way by Northamptonshire’s Daventry but eventually the Suffolk team’s extra quality in front of goal proved the difference between the sides.
In a typical frenetic cup tie opening to the match, neither outfit was able to dominate possession. And with the score still goalless at the halfway point, both sides knew they would have to make the most of any rare chances after the break.
Just five minutes after the restart, experienced striker Hilton found himself one-on-one with the visiting goalkeeper. The former Lowestoft Town player kept his cool to slot calmly in to the net, giving his side a crucial 1-0 advantage.
Daventry poured forward in search of an equaliser as the final whistle drew closer, and were caught on the counter-attack five minutes from time. Midfielder Parker beat the offside-trap to strike right-footed, in off the post, for his 15th goal of the season.
Needham lost on penalties to Chalfont St. Peter at the quarter-final stage last season, but will now hope to go one step further in this year’s competition.
