FA Vase holders Whitley Bay came from behind to defeat Chertsey Town 2-1 in their Fifth Round Proper replay at Hillheads Park.
The north-east club’s ability to retain the Vase had been given a stern test during a 1-1 draw between the sides last weekend, and they were given another difficult afternoon by their Combined Counties League Premier Division opponents.
Chertsey took the lead in the 31st minute through Kwabana Agyei. But the hosts fought back with goals from midfielder Paul Robinson and captain David Coulson before surviving some late Chertsey pressure to ensure their place in the Sixth Round draw.
Joining them will be Norfolk’s Wroxham, who romped to a five goal victory at Royston Town.
Steve Spriggs opened the scoring in just the fourth minute, before doubling his side’s lead six minutes into the second half.
Midfielder Danny White added a third on 53 minutes before Owen Paynter and 18-year-old Matt Daniels got their names on the scoresheet in the closing stages.
Elsewhere, Darren Freeman’s 80th minute strike earned Whitehawk a dramatic 3-2 victory over Marske United.
And in the day’s other tie, Barwell needed extra-time to defeat Willand Rovers 2-1.
