Two late goals saw FA Vase holders Whitley Bay progress to the Third Round Proper of this season’s competition at Hillheads Park.
Lee Kerr and Phil Bell were both on target for the hosts in the final ten minutes to secure a deserved victory for Ian Chandler’s side at the expense of battling Alsager Town.
Whitley have enjoyed a fine start to their Northern League Division One campaign, lying second in the standings, and started the game as favourites.
However, despite their underdog tag, Alsager started the game brightly and could easily have taken an early lead.
After riding their luck in the opening stages, Whitley began to take the game to the visitors and it was only an inspired goalkeeping display from Alsager goalkeeper Mike Langley that kept the game goalless.
But eventually the home side’s dominance finally told as striker Kerr broke the deadlock on 81 minutes.
And just six minutes later Kerr’s strike partner Bell doubled Whitley’s advantage, keeping the north-east side on course for a Wembley return.
