From facing Michael Owen and Kieron Dyer to gaining revenge on Lowestoft Town to reach The FA Vase Final, Newcastle United fan Paul Robinson has enjoyed Whitley Bay’s run this season and can’t wait for the chance to finally turn out at Wembley on Sunday…
Well, Paul, you’re here at Wembley. After coming so close last season, how does it feel?
Winning the Semi-Final was just pure emotion, especially after missing out to Lowestoft last year, you think your chance of reaching The Vase Final is gone. But we got our heads down this season again and started playing and working our way through the rounds and found ourselves in the Semis again. To get through was just so amazing.
You’re through now and just one win away from lifting The Vase…When you’re in the Semi-Final you think that you want to get to The Final, but it’s not just about getting to The Final, and hopefully winning the trophy, it’s about playing here at Wembley. Everyone was just so happy to have got past Lowestoft, we just couldn’t believe it.
You were here at Wembley a couple of weeks ago. Did it get you in the mood for today?Looking at Wembley on the telly you don’t realise what it’s like in real life. It’s such a massive place. Just think about all the players that have played here, too. But there’s not many Geordies who have been here though. It’s a nice thing for us to have, to be the first club from the north-east to get to the new Wembley. Hopefully some of the Geordies will see that and come down to support us.
And didn’t you play against Newcastle in a pre-season match?
I was previously at Newcastle Blue Star and we played a friendly against Newcastle United, just after Sam Allardyce had taken over. He had a lot of first team players in the game, Michael Owen played, Kieron Dyer played, Shola Ameobi, Solano. That was a really good experience. That was very special.
