Reigning champions Whitley Bay were among the teams to advance to the Fourth Round Proper of The FA Carlsberg Vase following a thrilling day of action.

The holders’ hopes of claiming a fourth successive FA Vase trophy are still alive after an emphatic 5-1 win over Bridlington Town on Saturday. Two goals from Paul Chow, who has now scored in 12 successive rounds of the Vase, helped secure Whitley’s passage to the next round.

Staveley MW were the day’s other big winners, as they hammered Squires Gate 4-0 away from home.

Enfield will join Whitley and Staveley in the draw for the next round after Wez Borghys’ 71st-minute winner earned them an impressive 2-1 win at Long Buckby.

South Park edged a tense three-goal thriller at home to Diss Town, while Newcastle Benfield recovered from conceding an early goal to record a 3-1 win at home to Deeping.

Elsewhere, Northern League Division One side Dunston UTS checked into the next round following their 3-1 victory at home to Parkgate, and they were joined by Reading Town, who earned a hard-fought 1-0 win at home to Cowes Sport.

They will be joined by Ashington, after second-half goals from Andrew Johnson and Jonny Godsmark earned the Northumberland side a terrific 2-0 away at Spennymoor.

The final tie of the Third Round Proper takes place on Sunday, when Hellenic League Premier Division side Old Woodstock Town host local rivals Wantage Town.
