Hanworth Villa are hoping to drown their FA Cup sorrows with a run in The FA Vase, after they were edged out of the former competition with an offside goal in a 3-2 defeat to AFC Totton on the brink of the First Round Proper.

They were the first Combined Counties Premier League side to make it to the Fourth Qualifying Round of The FA Cup and next up could have been teams like Charlton Athletic, Swindon Town or Sheffield Wednesday.

But after that defeat against Totton, Manager Bobby Dawson believes their FA Cup pain can help spur the players on in The FA Vase.

"They respond well to motivation," he told TheFA.com. "And coming off the back of that Cup defeat, after a fabulous performance, we want to carry it on.

"If we keep playing well, we can go far in The Vase and that's the attitude we're going to take every time we go onto the pitch."

After beating local rivals Bedfont Sports 3-1 in Round One, they are raring to take on the 2000 Vase winners Deal Town in a home tie at Rectory Meadow.

And Dawson explained: "Deal may not be doing too well in their league, but they have a great history in The Vase so we know it's going to be a tough game.

"This is only our second season in The Vase. We made our debut in it last season but we got knocked out after two games, but now we're flying."

Hanworth Villa have been in fine form this season and will be confident they can dispatch their Kent League Premier Division opponents on Saturday.

But they will be without right-midfielder Steve Loveridge, who has six goals in his last four games but is suspended for the match, along with captain Ricky Farnden.
