Former Tottenham striker John Duncan was left to rue a late missed penalty as his Loughborough University side had to settle for a replay against Dudley Town.

Duncan, who also managed Chesterfield during their famous FA Cup run to the Semi-Final in 1997, saw his side edge in front after only ten minutes.

After some neat build-up play down the right, Adam Young was on a hand to poke home a cross and put the students in the box seat.

Their joy was short-lived, however, as Dudley hit back with an equaliser seven minutes later. Duncan’s side failed to clear their lines and from the resulting melee, Marvin Nesbitt slotted home to restore parity.

Both defences were rarely troubled thereafter, with neither goalkeeper fully tested as the game petered out.

Dudley enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, but with only eight minutes remaining the students were awarded a penalty giving them a golden opportunity to progress to the First Round Proper.

Despite a well-struck effort, the ball cannoned off the post to safety just as Dudley’s fans were preparing for an early Vase exit.

The extra-time that ensued failed to bring a winner and the sides must now replay at Loughborough on Tuesday night.

Another prolific striker, Bob Taylor, who used to bang the goals in for Brentford and Gillingham, was also contemplating a replay as Diss Town could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Ely City.

Town lifted the famous Vase at Wembley in 1994 and were expected to progress against a side that are currently struggling in the Ridgeons League Premier Division.

The visitors produced an enterprising display and were rewarded for their adventure with a 2-2 draw. They will now be quietly confident of causing an upset in the replay on Tuesday night.
