Wembley's fastest goal

See Paul Chow's goal - the fastest at the new Wembley.

Whitley Bay from the Northern League’s Division One won yesterday’s FA Vase Final at Wembley, both equalling and setting new records for the competition in the process.

Bay became the second club in history to lift The Vase three times and the first for eleven years to retain it. The 6-1 scoreline gave them the highest score and the biggest margin of victory in a Vase Final.

Paul Chow, who had scored in Bay’s 2-0 win over Glossop North End in last season’s Final, didn’t take long yesterday to establish a record for the new Wembley. He nudged the ball past Scott Howie, the advancing Wroxham ‘keeper, and it rolled into the net just 21 seconds into the match.

That beat the old mark, set last May when Louis Saha gave Everton a 25-second lead against eventual winners Chelsea in The FA Cup Final. There had also been a quick goal in the new Wembley’s first official match, Giampaolo Pazzini scoring after 29 seconds of England’s Under-21 friendly with Italy in March 2007.

But Chow’s strike isn’t the fastest ever at Wembley…

Maurice Cox, playing for Cambridge against Oxford in the Varsity Match on 5 December 1979, scored a goal timed at 20 seconds. Oxford still won 3-1.
