Full list of Fourth Round ties After some lean years in the competition, Conference North club Workington are now making their mark in The FA Carlsberg Trophy. The club that had 26 years in the Football League have reached The Trophy’s last eight for the first time and travel down to play Stevenage Borough on Saturday.
Workington dropped out of the League in 1977, being replaced by Wimbledon, and took part in their first Trophy competition in the following season. Altrincham beat them 4-0 in a First Round replay after a 0-0 draw at the Reds’ Borough Park ground.
They managed to reached the Fifth Round, then the ‘last 16’, in 2000. They lost 1-0 at home to Kettering Town before 1,643 fans. After that they had seven successive seasons in which they failed to progress beyond the First Round.
Here is a summary of Workington’s Trophy exits over the last ten years:
1999-00 – Fifth Round v Kettering Town (home) 0-1
2000-01 – First Round v Gretna (away) 1-2
2001-02 – First Round v Lincoln United (home) 0-2
2002-03 – Prelim Round replay v Rocester (home) 3-4 on pens after 2-2
2003-04 – First Round v Spennymoor United (home) 0-3
2004-05 – First Round v Gainsborough Trinity (away) 1-2
2005-06 – Third Round Qualifying replay v Lancaster City (home) 1-2
2006-07 – Third Round Qualifying v Gateshead (home) 2-4
2007-08 – Second Round replay v Braintree Town (home) 1-2
2008-09 – Third Round v Wrexham (home) 1-3.
Things are looking up for the Reds now in Trophy terms. Victory against the holders at Broadhall Way will take them tantalisingly close to Wembley.
