Leigh Genesis marched through to the next stage of The FA Trophy with a resounding 4-1 victory over Skelmersdale United at Leigh Sports Village. The home side, managed by former Blackburn Rovers captain Garry Flitcroft, bounced back from falling behind in just the second minute of play to record an impressive win over their local rivals.
Just 18 miles separate the two north-west clubs, and both were looking to build on strong starts to their league campaigns. Skelmersdale lie fifth in the Unibond First Division North standings, with Leigh just one place below the west Lancashire outfit.
It was Skelmersdale who started the game the brightest and the visitors edged into a second minute lead through striker Mark Houghton.
But undaunted, Leigh regrouped and drew level in the 22nd minute thanks to striker Jordan Stepien.
Skelmersdale continued to take the game to the hosts for the rest of the first-half, but were unable to deal with Leigh’s superb attacking play after the restart.
Left winger Tom Ince gave the home side the lead for the first time in the match after 57 minutes, before Jamie Baguley and fellow midfielder Jack Downey sealed the win in the final 15 minutes.
