In form Witton Albion marched into The FA Trophy First Round Proper with a convincing 2-0 victory over Colwyn Bay at Llanelian Road. Midfielder Brad Maylett was the hero for the Northern Premier League side, grabbing two goals for the Cheshire outfit either side of half-time.
The tie looked difficult to call prior to kick-off, with both sides topping their respective leagues, but Witton proved themselves the superior team on a blustery day in north Wales.
Maylett opened the scoring on the half-hour mark, cutting inside from the left and firing inside the near post. And the former Burnley and Swansea winger settled the game with eight minutes to go, beating the offside trap and finishing from an acute angle.
The victory was extra sweet for Witton boss Gary Finley, who spent four years in charge Colwyn Bay.
"It's always pleasing to go back to your former employers and get a result," he said. "The fact that we were away from home and against tough opposition in The FA Trophy makes it even sweeter."
Finley was delighted with his side's performance on the day and is now hopeful of an extended cup run in this season's competition.
"We can't get carried away, but we have our victory and hopefully we can have a successful run in the competition this year," he said.
"We were the better team on the day and I don't think anyone could argue with the result."
