Bournemouth Electric from the Bournemouth Sunday League Premier Division took their place in today's Third Round draw after this ultimately convincing win on a grey November afternoon at Broadway Lane.
The teams were well-matched in some areas of the game, but only the home side had their shooting boots with them. Ajax LA from Littlehampton in Sussex, unbeaten this season in the Worthing & Horsham District League's Division Two, created the first scoring chance when the alert George Gaskin ran in behind the Electric defence for a one-on-one with 'keeper Emrah George. But the ball got stuck between his feet on a heavy pitch and the chance was lost.
The clear attacking intentions of both teams promised goals and it was slightly surprising that the first didn't arrive until the 37th minute. Electric's Daniel Baguley worked some space on the left and drew Ajax 'keeper Steve Phillips towards him as he advanced along the goal-line before slipping the ball across for a straightforward tap-in from Tom Jeffs.
Until then the tall, high-stepping Jeffs had looked the player most likely to find the net, and to prove the point he made it 2-0 a minute into first-half stoppage time. Joe Kittle, Electric's colossus of a centre-forward, nodded the ball down into Jeffs' path and he accelerated between two defenders before blasting a right-footer that whistled past Phillips' left hand and into the bottom corner.
There were a couple of breaks in the cloud cover after half-time as a confident Electric side added to their tally with two goals inside four minutes. Kittle miscued his 58th-minute spot-kick after a subtle trip in the box, but the ball dropped into the middle of the goal after Phillips had elected to throw himself to his left (pictured below). Then Kittle speared in a perfect ball from the right on the run and Tim Constable turned it effortlessly into the net for 4-0.
The game was surely up for Ajax now, but they did force a goal on 73 minutes when George dropped a left-wing corner in front of Ashley Finch and he could hardly miss from two yards. But if the visitors were harbouring any thoughts of a miraculous comeback from four goals down, those were extinguished within two minutes.
Phillips' misdirected goal-kick was chested down by Kittle, on his own about 25 yards out, and he quickly took the ball into the box before slotting home a simple fifth for Electric. The Ajax 'keeper then did a lot to atone for that indiscretion by making a series of acrobatic stops as a rampant home side threatened a big score.
Bournemouth Electric have been drawn away to Lakeside Athletic in Round Three.
