Duke of York, from the Northamptonshire Sunday Combination League, continued their quest to regain The FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup with a 2-1 win over Liverpool-based Mariners.

Dan Holman scored twice scored either side of Ryan Keyo's clinical finish to edge Duke of York one step closer to the Final and earn a place in the last four.

It was a happy return to Liverpool for Duke of York, whose last visit to the City in 2003 saw them lift The Sunday Cup.

Mariners, who play in the Ormskirk Sunday League, were knocked out in the Second Round last season and welcomed a side who hadn't competed in the competition since 2005 to the Liverpool County FA Ground at Walton Hall Park.

And it was the visitors who took the lead after 20 minutes when Holman (who has scored 19 goals for Long Buckby this season) latched on to a through ball and slotted home past the advancing keeper.

Mariners should have equalised very shortly after, when Sean Tierney created some space in the penalty box only to see his shot go agonisingly wide of the goal. Mariners did restore parity on 35 minutes through their talismanic striker Ryan Keyo, whose clinical finish was the equal of Holman's earlier classy goal.

Duke of York regained the lead ten minutes in to the second half, when Mariners keeper Kevin O'Brien, failed to hold Dan Quigley's free kick and the ball fell for Dan Holman, who tapped in from close range.

O'Brien redeemed himself a few minutes later, when his one-handed save from Ben Foster ensured the defecit remained at one goal.

Both teams continued to create chances and Mariners had to make two goal line clearances in the 86th minute, to keep the tie alive. Despite the trickery of Keyo and their moving central defender Mark White upfront, Mariners were unable to find another equaliser and Duke of York progressed to the Semi-Final.

Elsewhere in the quarter-finals, two Liverpool sides did reach the last four as 2009 Finalists Oyster Martyrs from the Liverpool Sunday League beat Luton outfit Club Lewsey 1-0 at Heswall, while Paddock, semi-finalists three years ago, won 4-1 away at Knighton Arms in Hamble, Hampshire.
