Richie Rooney's Oyster Martyrs finally lay to rest the ghost of their 2009 FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup Final defeat to Scots Grey by beating fellow Liverpool Sunday League Premier Division counterparts Paddock 1-0.

In front of over 1,000 fans at Tranmere Rovers' Prenton Park, it was a special day Rooney, uncle of England and Manchester United striker Wayne, as Leighton McGivern grabbed the winner with 15 minutes left.

The game started brighter for Paddock but both sides seemed edgy with no real opportunities for either.

In the first twenty minutes there were shots going wide and plenty of free-kicks although nothing malicious.

The fact that there was a lot at stake seemed to be reflecting in both teams style of play and the two defences were pretty solid from the word go.

Midfielder Joey Duncan saw quite a lot of the ball for Paddock in the first half and Leighton McGivern seemed to be waiting for the right moment for Oyster but the chances never came and the game ended 0-0 at half-time.

The second half started off in a similar fashion but soon Lee Dames and Ian Latham started linking up well on the left wing. It resulted in a cracking long-range effort for the latter, which Paddock 'keeper Robert O'Connor watched go just over his head.

This link-up play led to talented Oyster striker McGivern being brought into the game and his presence forced what turned out to be the winning goal.

After a vital Anthony Shinks tackle with the striker bearing down on goal a throw-in saw Dean Forshaw set up the Man of the Match who slotted past the Paddock 'stopper to make it 1-0 to the Oyster with 15 minutes left.

This gave some urgency to the Paddock side who tried to force the issue with some great attacking play from Jamie Henders and Paul Wheeler and although they had two penalty appeals turned down in the last ten minutes, time ultimately ran out.

One chance, one goal and one winner, Oyster Martyrs FC are The FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup winners for 2011.
