Jones eyes defensive berth

Manchester United versatile new boy looks ahead to Wembley bow.

Manchester United's Phil Jones could make his Wembley bow in The FA Community Shield sponsored by McDonald's on Sunday but he is still unsure what position he could be playing in.

The 19-year-old England Under-21 man, who was one of the Three Lions' star performers at the UEFA U21 Championship in June,  is equally adept in the heart of defence or in the deep-lying midfield role and is open to facing local rivals Manchester City in either position under the Arch.

"I used to play in midfield but I definitely consider myself a centre-half and that's where I play my best football," Jones said to United's official magazine 'Inside United'.

"I like to see the game in front of me and read the play. At Blackburn, when the manager asked me to move into midfield, it was strange and I didn't expect it.

"It took a few games to adapt to that role and the positions to take. If I was asked to do that here, I'd feel comfortable with it."

If deployed in United's defence, Jones would come up against one of the most expensive and talented strike forces ever assembled in the Premier League, but he is relishing the challenge

"As a centre-back, I read the game well. I'm good in the air and have a decent range of passing," he said.

"Like every footballer, I have things to improve and I'll continue to work on them at United."
