United manager happy with win and match practise for players.
Sir Alex Ferguson was pleased to see a number of key players get match practise at Wembley and said his side deserved to beat Chelsea to lift The FA Community Shield sponsored by McDonald's.
United made it a record 14th Shield success as goals from Antonio Valencia, new signing Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov were enough to see of Carlo Ancelotti's Blues.
Salomon Kalou did pull a goal back for Chelsea to make it 2-1, but United were more clinical where it mattered. But it wasn't just the result that made Ferguson happy.
"It was a decent display and I'm very happy players such as Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and Park Ji-Sung are nearer match fitness," he said.
"Some of the football was very good at times. I think we deserved to win it.
"I don't know if Wayne and Park are ready yet. The internationals in the coming week are a bonus for them and I'm delighted they are involved."
The manager was also delighted to see Javier Hernandez, 'Chicharito', score on his competitive debut for the Reds. His 76th-minute strike was a little strange, as he slid onto Valencia's cross, his shot ricocheted off his own head and into the net.
"He'll not try it again - it was a quite peculiar goal," said Ferguson. "But he's quick to get in the box - he's a really good finisher. He's got a bubbly character and speaks good English. He's settled in very well."
And Ferguson is expecting big things from Berbatov, who clinched the victory in the closing moments with a sublime lob over Henrique Hilario. "He has great talent. You can't dispute the man's ability - he's a genius at times. Maybe it's going to be his season now."
Meanwhile, Chelsea counterpart Carlo Ancelotti said: "We played too slow in the first half - it was not our best day but this is normal, it can happen at the start of the season.
"It's impossible for some players to be fit and quick after ten days of pre-season. Players who came back from their holidays on 26 July need to improve their condition."
