Natalie Gutteridge bagged a brace as Sunderland overcame Leeds United to win the FA Women’s Premier League Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

In what was the second season in which the competition had been played following the 2010 formation of the Women’s Super League, the Black Cats deservedly won a hard-fought contest to complete a league and Cup double seven days after they had clinched the Premier League title.

Striker Gutteridge struck a goal in each half before a stoppage time penalty scored by striker Carey Huegett gave Leeds a late consolation.

Delighted winning manager Mick Mulhern said: "It was a great performance. Leeds are a tough side who've challenged us all season, but we beat them twice in the league so we knew we were capable of doing it again. Credit to them though, they never stopped battling."

The two teams had drawn 1-1 in the group stage of the competition, but Sunderland always looked the more likely side to win the final after taking a ninth minute lead through a Gutteridge header from captain Kelly McDougall's assist.

McDougall wasted the chance to double the lead when her 30th-minute penalty was saved by keeper Julianna Draycott following a foul on Beth Mead by Leah Galton.

Left winger Galton was relieved to see the spot-kick saved and then, three minutes before half-time, she almost equalised with a 20-yard shot that flew just over the bar.

But 21 minutes into the second half Leeds went further behind when Gutteridge headed in her second goal from an excellent Sophie Williams cross.

Player of the match Williams was denied a deserved goal when Draycott saved bravely at the winger's feet in the 88th minute.

Leeds' consolation goal arrived three minutes into stoppage time, Huegett netting from the spot following a hand-ball by midfielder Rachel Furness.

Leeds boss Chris Welburn said: "We started the game slowly, but we were better in the second half and the girls gave it everything.

"Congratulations to Sunderland, they've deserved their double, but we've done really well this season after battling against relegation last year."
