'Proud of our progress'

Pickford and Gray say England can head home from Poland with heads held high

Wednesday 28 Jun 2017

Both goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and semi-final goalscorer Demarai Gray agree England should head home from Poland today proud of their showing at the European Under-21 Championship.

Aidy Boothroyd’s Young Lions suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Germany in the semi-final, following a 2-2 draw after extra time.

The team’s progress to the last four was an improvement on each of their last three showings at the tournament though – a period in which they recorded just one win.

And that fact is not lost on Everton-bound Pickford.

“As a group of lads, we’ve done ourselves proud,” said the 23-year-old.

“We’re disappointed not to be in the final, but the last three tournaments with the U21s we haven’t got out of the group, so we’ve got further this time and we’ll take positives from it.”

Gray added: “I’m proud of the boys and everybody should be proud of themselves because we dug deep.

“We knew Germany were a good team and we took them to extra time. It’s just a bit unfortunate on penalties.

“I think all the lads should be proud of themselves.”

Gray, one of the youngest members of the squad, turns 21 today.

And though he will not be celebrating as he had hoped, the Leicester City winger was not too downbeat about the outcome.

“It’s obviously disappointing to go out the way we did. If we were a bit more clinical in the first 20 minutes, because we had a few chances, it would’ve been different, but it just wasn’t to be,” said Gray.

“We worked hard and we challenged them and on another day we would’ve beaten them with the chances we created, so we were unlucky.

“That’s how it is sometimes. We were up and down and we’ve rode our luck at times and they’ve rode theirs.

“But it just wasn’t our night.

“I was gutted for Nath [Nathan Redmond] with the penalty. He’s been such a big influence on me so it’s hard to take, but we can come together and learn from it as a group.”

England had started the contest on the front foot. And though they fell behind, the Young Lions turned the tie around with goals from Gray and Tammy Abraham to carve out a lead with 20 minutes remaining.

And Pickford admits he thought the team would hold out and reach Friday’s final.

“I thought we were going to do it in 90 minutes,” said the stopper, who saved one of Germany’s four spot-kicks.

“As a team, we stuck together all the way through. We were 1-0 down going into half-time and got a goal back. We went 2-1 up, so it’s just unfortunate.

“We’ve practised pens all tournament and all through the pre-camp so it was one of those, pot luck.”
