Peterborough and Wigan overcame non-League opposition to reach the third round of the Emirates FA Cup

League One Peterborough United and Wigan Athletic survived almighty scares against non-League opposition to qualify for the third round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The Posh trailed Woking at home before roaring back to run out 5-2 winners while Wigan also found themselves behind at the hands of AFC Fylde before two late Will Grigg goals saw them triumph 3-2 in their second round replay.

After coming from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw in the original tie earlier this month, Woking upset the apple cart once again with 19 minutes on the clock, striker Inih Effiong fainting classily before curling home a left-footed effort to silence London Road.

However, the Posh drew level just before the half-hour mark, midfielder Michael Doughty neatly slotting into the bottom right-hand corner to claim his first goal for the club, before Jack Marriott poked into the net from Gwion Edwards’ cross to turn the tie on its head.

Woking were in dreamland once again when right-back Matt Young turned Edwards inside and out before dispatching a low strike in the 68th minute but parity lasted a heartbeat, with Mariott blasting home to make it 3-2.

The visitors’ Richard Orlu then barged over Danny Lloyd in the area and Marcus Maddison converted the resultant spot-kick before Edwards finished things off at the death.

At the DW Stadium, Ivan Toney’s opener for the Latics just past the half-hour mark was cancelled out five minutes before the break, Simon Grand stabbing home after Wigan had failed to clear their lines.

The reigning National League North champions then really handed League One’s table-toppers a scare when Danny Rowe’s deflected strike found its way past keeper Matija Sarkic.

But with ten minutes to go, Grigg slammed a shot high into the net from Gary Roberts’ pass before the Northern Ireland striker really caught fire with another effort to break the Coasters’ resistance with six minutes to go.

Elsewhere, Jayden Stockley’s 116th-minute winner saw Exeter City defeat Forest Green Rovers by 2-1 to set up a third round tie at home to West Bromwich Albion.

With 30 minutes on the clock, the prolific Christian Doidge notched from the penalty spot after he had been upended by Jordan Moore-Taylor, the Welsh striker grabbing his 12th goal in 11 appearances.

The Grecians saw Jordan Tillson pick up a second booking in the 63rd minute but nine minutes later, Keanu Marsh-Brown brought down Kyle Edwards in the box and Exeter had a spot-kick of their own, Pierce Sweeney equalising from 12 yards.

As both sides jostled in extra-time, Rovers themselves went down to ten men as Manny Monthe was shown a second yellow card and, with four minutes to go, Stockley was on-hand to nod home from Hiram Boateng’s cross to win it for Exeter.

Francois Zoko struck as Yeovil Town finally defeated nine-man Port Vale by 3-2.

Vale had both Cristian Montano and James Gibbons sent off and twice trailed to goals from Otis Khan but wonder-strikes from Marcus Harness and Antony Kay, who made it 2-2 in extra-time, kept the tie on a knife edge.

But, shortly after Kay had restored parity, Zoko popped up to seal the Glovers’ progress.

Carlisle United’s Tuesday night meeting with Gillingham was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

In Wednesday’s re-arranged game, Danny Graham's goal helped Blackburn Rovers book a home third-round tie against Hull with a 1-0 win over Crewe at Gresty Road.

After a 3-3 draw in the original tie, Graham’s fifth goal of the season was set up by Derrick Williams in the 24th minute with Sam Hart later seeing an effort cleared off the Crewe goal line.
