Spurs are on their way to Wembley

Wednesday evening sees Wembley Stadium connected by EE host a record-breaking crowd for the start of Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League adventure, as they take on AS Monaco.

A crowd in excess of 85,000, a record for an English stadium at the group stage of the Champions League, will be welcomed into the home of English football for the game.

It's the first of Spurs' three group games in UEFA's flagship club competition, which are all being held at Wembley due to a reduction in capacity at White Hart Lane this term.

And ironically, the last time it was used as a home venue for European groups stage fixtures was by Spurs’ north London rivals, Arsenal, back in 1999.

Wembley is already familiar to a number of the Spurs squad, and England striker Harry Kane is looking forward to a return there with the Lilywhites as they prepare to face the Ligue 1 outfit.

"If there are 85-90,000 Tottenham fans in there it's only going to make you play better," he said.

"A lot of us have played there already, so it feels like even more of a home.

"Everyone knows how iconic Wembley is, but that's what we've got to be careful of, Monaco are going to come here and it's a big occasion for them as well. We have to make sure we're ready for that."

Fellow Three Lions star Eric Dier, who this week signed a new contract with Spurs, added: "We're all excited to play in the Champions League and at such a special stadium like Wembley - we want to make great memories.

"This is the highest level of football and everyone is excited. It's a great challenge and we all want to take that challenge."
