England Under-21 international Jordon Ibe scored his first goal for Liverpool as he helped the Reds to a 1-0 win away to Rubin Kazan in the UEFA Europa League.
The victory saw Liverpool move on to six points in Group B after four matches, just two points behind leaders FC Sion and Jurgen Klopp's side now know a win over third-place Bordeaux on 26 November at Anfield would ensure their progression.
England internationals Nathaniel Clyne and James Milner were also included in the starting XI by Klopp as the Reds, who were without England players Jordan Henderson, Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge due to injury, dominated the first half but were unable to break down the Russian defence.
The visitors had enjoyed 77 per cent possession before Ibe finally broke the deadlock on 52 minutes with a superb low drive from 18 yards, which went in via the post.
Milner almost made it 2-0 soon after with a shot which was tipped over by Sergey Ryzhikov, before the midfielder departed for England team-mate Adam Lallana just after the hour mark.
Ibe was later denied a second goal by Ryzhikov following Lallana’s pass and although Rubin Kazan enjoyed more of the ball late on, the visitors were relatively comfortable in securing a first win of their European campaign.
Cameron Brannagan, who was selected in the England Under-20s squad for the double-header against France next week, was an unused substitute for Liverpool.
Back in the UK, Tottenham Hotspur named five Englishman in their starting XI tonight and one of them, Harry Kane, played a huge part in the 2-1 victory over against Anderlecht.
Eric Dier was called up to the England squad for the first time earlier in the day and the 21-year-old was joined by fellow Three Lions Dele Alli and Ryan Mason, and ex-Under-21 international Kieran Trippier.
Kane, who has eight goals in 14 caps for his country, opened the scoring just before the half-hour mark with a fine first-time finish from 18 yards.
Anderlecht then equalised in the second half through Imoh Ezekiel before Mousa Dembele won it with three minutes of normal time remaining, with a stunning right-footed strike from outside the area.
Tottenham, who introduced England Under-19 international Josh Onomah on 77 minutes, now top Group J, with all four sides still capable of qualifying.
