England Under-21s striker Danny Ings says he’s prepared to be patient as he waits for a spot in the starting line-up at the Euro Finals.

The Liverpool-bound striker, who is still contracted to Burnley until 1 July, has had to be content with coming off the bench in the first two games for Gareth Southgate’s side in Czech Republic.

But after coming on at half time to help the Three Lions to their first win of the competition against Sweden on Sunday, Ings was happy with his contribution.

Ings gave England an added threat when he came on at half time against Sweden

"The idea was to stretch the game because there were a lot of bodies in the middle," he revealed.

"He [Southgate] put me on to stretch them and get gaps in behind and between.

"It was a tough game to get the ball going because it was such a dry pitch and it was hard to play our slick football, but the lads handled it very well and we mixed our football up well.

"I thought we played some tremendous football at times and we got the win.

"These are the types of games when goals do come late, we played against a team who were very direct.

"But the lads had the belief from start to finish and we got that break and a fantastic finish from Jesse."

The Three Lions now know that a win against Italy in their final group game on Wednesday will be enough to take England into the semi-finals.

And whilst Ings is hoping he gets the nod to start that game, he accepts that with the competition for places in the squad, it’s not always going to be guaranteed.

Ings also featured as a substitute in the opening game with Portugal last week

"I respect the manager's decision, but I will make sure I am ready when called upon like I was [on Sunday]," he explained.

"I want to start every game but you have to respect the staff and that's what I'll do.

"That is the competition you want for any side, club or country. You need that competition to push each other along to perform better.

"We did that today. Everyone came on and made an impact. That is what the manager needs."

Ings’ decision to join Liverpool was announced just before the England squad headed out to Czech Republic for the Finals.

The 23-year-old has been reluctant to speak too much about his switch, which will be finalised on the expiry of his current term with Burnley, but admits he’s honoured to be joining the Anfield ranks.

"Of course it is fantastic for me to get that move," he said. "But I have to put that to one side and this is my main aim at the moment, I want to get as many minutes on the pitch as I can for my country.

"But it is a boost being a Liverpool player, I can't wait to get started and to work with Brendan Rodgers and the players at Liverpool is an unbelievable dream come true for me, really.

"It is a challenge I am really looking forward to and I can't wait to get going.

"As I say, I put that to one side now and concentrate on this."

Ings is so keen to get started says he will join up with his new team-mates after a short break at the end of the Euros, even if that means cutting short an allotted time he’s been given off.

"I think they were giving me three weeks from the last game of this tournament," he revealed.

"I will be raring to go so I will probably only have two and then join up with them on tour because I don't want to be playing catch-up.

"I would prefer to be around the squad and ready to go for the start of the season.

"You need down time and for your body to relax and prepare for the season. At the same time I am raring to go and can't wait to get in."
