World Cup fever has well and truly set in among the England Women’s team after they arrived in Moncton on Friday afternoon.

The quaint New Brunswick city is the venue for the Lionesses’ first two group matches at Canada 2015.

They will take on France, ranked third in the world, on Tuesday 9 June followed by Mexico on Saturday 13 June.

England were greeted at Moncton airport by some local drummers and the tournament’s official mascot, a Great White Owl called Shueme.

Three Lions striker Ellen White said: “It was a great reception. Now it really feels like we are in a World Cup, with all the branding and the media attention at the airport. Everyone is really excited.”

Mark Sampson’s squad spent 10 days training in Toronto, during which time they faced the host nation in one final warm-up match in front of 23,000 fans in Hamilton.

England’s final match in Group F is against Colombia in Montreal on Wednesday 17 June.

The World Cup gets under way on Saturday when Canada take on China in Edmonton in front of what is expected to be the biggest crowd for any Canadian sports team in history.
