The Southampton youngster was named in the starting XI as the Saints drew 2-2 away to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon.
Despite feeling a tinge of disappointment with the second goal his team conceded, the left-back says the game was another key part of his development.
Targett said: “It was a good experience. With their second goal it’s a mistake, but it’s a learning curve for me."
Ronald Koeman’s side had travelled to Holland last week as they defeated Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa League. Although Targett did not feature last Thursday, the 19-year-old admits it will take time for the Saints squad to adapt to their excessive fixture schedule.
“We need to get used to playing Thursday and Sunday. That’s where the club wants to be and where we want to be as players.”
Targett, who made his top-flight debut for the south coast side back in September 2014, has just come back from the U21 European Championship.
And with the more experienced Ryan Bertrand out injured, Targett is looking to make a statement and establish himself in the first team. "We had a couple of great chances to take all three points, but it was a good point away from home."
Southampton's draw in the north east also saw the return of England International Jay Rodriguez after 16 months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.
Assistant manager Erwin Koeman, who was standing in for brother Ronald who could not travel due to rupturing an Achilles, said: "I think for him it was a big victory to start because he had trained for six weeks already with us and he made some minutes so he was ready for it.
"But after that long period of being out for maybe 15 or 16 months, I have to say he played very well."
Southampton's next fixture falls this Saturday in the early kick off against Everton, with both Targett and Rodriguez pushing to start.
