Steve Cooper is relishing the challenge for his Young Lions in the New Year after three tough opponents for the UEFA Development Tournament were announced.

His England U16s side will face a trio of games in February as they welcome France, Switzerland and Slovakia to St. George's Park.

The head coach says he is looking forward to the triple-header and the meet-up will allow him further time to instil the England DNA in his squad.

"It's another opportunity to get the lads together. We got through the Victory Shield and had some good time with them there, but it's always good to get them back together as soon as you can," Cooper told TheFA.com.

"It's about getting them in a tournament environment and giving them some great experience against France, Switzerland and Slovakia.

"We are a bit further down the line now of the players understanding how we want to play so it will be good to put that to the test."

The former head of academy at Liverpool started his role with the national team prior to this year's Victory Shield in October.

Having seen his youngsters progress throughout their first three camps under him, Cooper wants them to begin 2015 as they finished this year, with victories over Northern Ireland and Scotland.

"I think it's important that they pick up where they left off really. We felt there has been some good progress made and their understanding of what is required," he said.

"We did a lot of work throughout the Victory Shield, not just on the pitch but around the camp, on bedding in the England DNA and how we want them to play and how we want them to grow.

"But it's about how you apply it, and this is the challenge. They have to continue improving on what they have already done.”

And having secured three games against strong opposition, the former Wrexham player says the four-team tournament will provide the perfect test for his side.

"You want to expose the players to a variety of games, experiences and keep presenting them with different tests.

"These will be three big challenges that we can involve ourselves in and then reflect on."

He added: "The players understand that these types of games is what it's going to be like for them moving on to the U17s and beyond in international football, and that's exactly how we will treat it.

"We've still got to keep embedding the principles of how we want our England teams to play, but this will provide another ideal test for them."

Cooper is expected to announce his squad for the tournament in early February. The tournament will be held behind-closed-doors.
