Craig Culkin will encourage his Jersey side to take risks and put the emphasis on attack when they pull on the Three Lions in the UEFA Regions' Cup this week.

The island's top amateurs are representing England in San Marino after winning The FA Inter-League Cup last season.

And no English side has ever made it past the group stages in this competition, so boss Culkin knows his team have a chance of making history.

He told BBC Radio Jersey: "I think we need to play on the edge, we need to take risks and we need to take gambles if we're going to qualify.

“It’s three of the toughest games this Jersey or England Amateur squad will have faced.

“I know the players are pumped up for it but I think it's just about getting the focus right and getting mentally prepared for the week ahead.”

Luke Watson is set to wear the captain's armband and striker Charlie Petulla will miss Wednesday's opening match against the Republic of Ireland's representatives, Leinster and Munster.

Tournament rules state Petulla is too young to compete in that match, but he will celebrate his 19th birthday while in San Marino.

That means he is available for the following two matches against Eastern Region (Northern Ireland) on Friday and San Marino on Sunday.

Culkin added: "The only thought going through my head is just trying to get three points on the board on Wednesday.

"All my focus and energy now is really geared to the three points and the way I look at it is there's a job to be done.

"In my experience of being the Jersey manager, tournament football has gone really well for us. Tournament football gets the best out of me and, knowing the players, it certainly gets the best out of them."

The winners of Group Six will progress to the final stages of the tournament, which will be hosted by the Italian Football Association at the end of June.

Representatives from Belarus, Hungary, Italy, Russia and Spain have already qualified.
